Birds are wonderful creatures, regarded by most of us with a mix of curiosity, mystery – and myth. We’ve tried to illuminate some of the habits and behaviors of birds (and how you can keep them out of your facility). This month, we’d like to cover some of the most persistent myths about birds and bird removal.

MYTH #1

Birds live in only one area of your building. Birds are bold, fast-moving animals. Once a bird gets into your building, it’s bound to explore. Pay close attention – if you see a bird in receiving, then one among the merchandise, it may be the same bird. (Then again, you may have two or more.)

MYTH #2

Humans have to feed birds in winter or they’ll starve. Birds thrive all over the world, including in regions unpopulated by humans. Yet because we’ve grown accustomed to hanging bird feeders, especially during winter, we think birds depend on us for food.

The result? Your customers and employees scatter seed for their feathered neighbors, and they hang around, eventually making their way inside your building.

MYTH #3

Birds in a store or building are not a problem. Customers are sometimes charmed by birds flitting about. But building owners know better – birds can damage inventory, compromise food safety, and bring disease.

They cause product loss, make messes in stores, and sometimes frighten customers. We’ve come into stores where employees have named the intruding birds. Regardless of how small and cute they are, trust us – the birds are not your friend.

MYTH #4

Being inside is better for the birds. Birds need to be outside – period. Food and shelter may be more abundant inside a building, but they lose other things they need when they are cut off from the outdoors.

For example, birds’ nails are kept short from constant contact with tree wood and other natural surfaces. Without that contact, their nails can grow too long, even to the point of impacting the normal function of their feet. Also, being inside robs them of the chance to breed and eat a variety of healthy foods they need.

MYTH #5

It’s not possible to catch birds. In other words, you have to kill them – with poison, guns, or glue traps. We understand this myth. A wily bird can evade other live-capture methods for quite some time.

We had a customer who had a cardinal stuck in his building for two years. When he finally called Meridian, we set up our nets and caught the rascal on her first flight of the day!

Bonus myth.

That brings us to our final myth – our capture net harms birds. Absolutely not! In fact, Meridian’s patented system is the safest way to capture birds.

Our nets were developed by ornithologists to study birds in the field. We monitor these nets at all times, and birds are removed as soon as they’re safely caught. And in answer to an oft-asked question, our nets are not electrified!
