When Does Nesting Season Start?

By the start of spring (around March 20), nesting season has already started.

About Nesting Season for Birds

For facility managers, birds and their related activities can present a significant array of challenges.  As we move into spring, the nesting season has already started. Birds are looking for the optimal place to build a nest and raise their young. They look for food, water, warmth, shelter, and safety from predators. Taking the proper actions can save you a significant amount of hassle, product damage as well as future bird issues.

Nesting Season – What To Do

For any location, there are a few key issues to address to reduce nesting and the impact it has in your area.

  1. Reduce all attractants to the birds including food, water, warmth, and shelter.
  2. Keep the area clean, reducing nesting materials, and train staff to locate nests.
  3. Know the difference between nuisance birds and federally protected birds.
  4. Regularly remove nests of nuisance birds as soon as they start to build.
  5. Always inspect nests prior to removal to ensure there are no eggs or young.

Removing Bird Nests

There are many regulations that affect birds and how we can interact with them. Do not attempt to remove the nest of any federally protected birds. You can safely remove the nests of English house sparrows, European starlings, and pigeons.

If you have either a federally protected bird nest or an active nest with eggs, you should contact the appropriate professionals who can relocate this for you.

Why Bird Nest Removal is Effective

When you remove nests before the birds establish their young, they will find a new place to build a nest for the season further away from your location. This method helps keep your area clean, doesn’t harm the birds, and will encourage them to maintain a larger distance from your facility.

How to Remove Bird Nests

When removing nests, you need to be careful about dust, debris, and potentially harmful effects. Bird nests and droppings are known to contain many diseases and, therefore, must be handled carefully.

It is recommended you utilize proper safety equipment including gloves, a facemask, and a spray bottle with water to wet the material before removal. This helps to reduce dust and contain the nest.

What to Do With Bird Nests

Once removed, the nest should be disposed of immediately. In addition, be mindful of the areas below the nest, as it’s removed particles will drop. You should either clear the area underneath before removal or cover it with a tarp or plastic. This will allow you to successfully clean and sterilize the entire area.

We recommend you establish bird nest removal guidelines, along with an Integrated Bird Pest Management program, to help keep your facility bird free. For additional information on nest removal or an Integrated Bird Pest Management program, use our contact form.
