Five proven things you can do to set yourself up for success
The holiday season is here! Sure, some of us have yet to get the decorations from the attic, but for retail businesses and the companies that serve them, holiday crunch time is now. As we mentioned last year, you will see more birds when more people enter and leave your building. We often experience a surge of calls this time of year. And we are ready to help! However, pro-action always beats re-action. Here are a few tips to help your business get ahead of the holiday bird curve:
1. Take care of existing bird problems now.
Before the holiday rush is the ideal time to take care of bird problems. Clear nests, close off openings and take care of existing bird intruders. (We can help with this!) Getting rid of them now could mean saving headaches later, because….
2. Birds learn from one another!
Believe it or not, we’ve observed birds testing automatic doors by triggering the electronic sensor and flying inside once it opens. Other birds will begin seeing and learning this behavior, so removing birds quickly means you preventing this knowledge from passing from one bird to another!
3. Close your doors.
As we’ve discussed numerous times before, open doors—from dock doors to customer entry doors—are the number one avenue birds use to gain entry to your building. Taking the extra care of closing your doors, even in the face of increased traffic, will reduce bird incursions dramatically.
4. Check your trees and greenery.
Trees, garlands and wreaths, while beautiful and festive, are natural bird habitats. We suggest giving your green inventory (even fake ones) a gentle shake to flush any birds that may be roosting within. If you want to display a fresh-cut Christmas tree outside, make sure it’s at least twenty to thirty feet away from your doors. The further they are from entry points, the less chance birds can fly inside from their stopover in your beautiful Christmas tree.
One other helpful hint—most of our bird tips help reduce other pests as well. For example, other animals also shelter in trees. If you don’t want snakes in your store, shake those trees outside!

BONUS TIP: Avoid the last-minute scramble before shutting down for the holiday.
