The North Miami, FL, location reported a sparrow inside the store. When Meridian arrived,
Technician Shawn M. found the fledgling trapped in a glass compartment above the foyer.
OBJECTIVE
Remove the trapped sparrow from a challenging space
- The sparrow had flown into a transparent box that descended two feet below a conduit.
- The nearest entry point to the conduit was 15 feet from the glass box, and the conduit would
not support an adult human’s weight. - The sparrow was already too exhausted to fly out on its own. It was in danger of dying inside
the glass box above the foyer.
SOLUTION
Humbly confident, the Technician used technology and a rigged device to capture the sparrow.
- Working alone, Technician Shawn rigged a series of poles to extend a net through the conduit
and into the compartment. - The Technician had to work blind, re-adjusting over the course of 45 minutes and attaching his
phone to poles to locate the bird. - The bird was lost once inside the conduit. Shawn used a sparrow call to home in on the bird and capture it in a hand net.
RESULTS
Meridian rescued the sparrow and removed it from the store.
- The Partner recognized even a single bird is cause for concern regarding food safety
and public image. - Meridian also identified several nests which needed to be removed and a broken automatic door
which could allow more birds to enter.
