PIGEON REMOVAL AND POPULATION REDUCTION SOLUTION

Meridian Removes Pigeons Causing Health Risks to Distribution Center

PARTNER

Distribution center for a national retail chain

  • The Wilton, NY, facility covers approximately 1.5 million square feet and features more than 350 dock doors–points of entry for pigeons and other birds.

OBJECTIVE

Remove the population of rock doves (pigeons) that were nesting in the distribution center.

  • Pigeon droppings were causing health and sanitation risks for employees, in addition to slip and fall hazards.
  • In addition, the birds would fly out from under docks and trucks unexpectedly, raising safety concerns.

SOLUTION

Four Bird Removal Technicians (BRTs) worked with the Partner to remove the pigeons over two nights.

  • Four BRTs from New York and Virginia opted to remove the pigeons at night due to the sheer number of doors in use during the day.
  • Pigeons had built nests under loading dock doors. The team had to block each area before removing the birds.
  • Initial inspection revealed 50 pigeons. Over two four-hour nights, Meridian removed 157 birds overall.

RESULTS

The distribution center is now bird-free.

  • After the removal, Meridian conducted light pressure washing on areas affected by pigeon droppings and nests.
  • The Partner had worked with another company to install shock tracks and exclusion devices near the dock doors. These items failed to keep the pigeons out. The Partner canceled their contract with this company and signed an annual contract with Meridian.
