EXTERIOR POPULATION REDUCTION SOLUTION

Meridian Ensures Supermarket Shopping Carts are Bird-Free

PARTNER

Leading supermarket chain

  • This Ithaca, NY, supermarket location found sparrows roosting inside the shopping carts stored outside. Their droppings and presence made the shopping carts unusable and drove away customers.

OBJECTIVE

Capture the existing birds and reduce the exterior bird population to prevent future damage

  • BRT Monty S. determined both capture and exterior population reduction was needed.
  • He would capture the birds roosting in the carts and take steps to reduce the population by half.

SOLUTION

Two trips were required to accommodate customer and store requests. The objective was achieved.

  • The BRT used a special process developed specifically to remove birds from small spaces like shopping carts.
  • The BRT captured three birds but was asked to stop work so customers could access the carts. He returned on Monday morning at 5:30 AM and captured all birds present by 7:00 AM before customers needed to use the carts.

RESULTS

Twelve total birds were captured. The shopping cart area is now bird-free.

  • By removing the birds, the supermarket could clean the area and install deterrents or other mitigation to prevent further bird incursions.
  • Exterior population is not guaranteed, as birds can return. However, the Partner was very pleased to have the cart area clean again.

Time needed to achieve the sparrow population reduction objective

“If a BRT is asked to leave, especially on an exterior job where there is no guarantee, they could close the work order and leave what was left for the store to deal with. Monty took it upon himself to come back and solve the customer’s problem.”
