It’s Time for Fall Cleaning

Best make your building nice before you hit that pumpkin spice

Many of us undertake spring cleaning at our homes. At Meridian, we recommend a thorough fall cleaning for your place of business. Nesting season is over, and due to the increased numbers, birds disperse over a wider area during the autumn season (hopefully away from your building). That means:

This is the time when birds are least interested in your building.

The weather is still warm. There’s plenty of water about. Insects, worms, and plants—birds’ favorite foods—are abundant. Your building is not that attractive, not when compared to the birds’ natural habitat. However, this doesn’t last forever.

Brace yourselves. Winter is coming.

Once the cold temperatures hit and plants and small prey go dormant, birds will be looking for the easy score. The food and seeds you keep in your building look mighty attractive, as well as the cozy shelter your facility provides.

Cleanliness is key. Here’s why.

Birds, like most creatures, look for security. One hallmark of species safety is signs that other birds have been someplace. If your building still has old nests or droppings (both emit pheromones), it’s a signal your place is “friendly to birds.” If you clean your facility while bird activity is low, you may not be fighting against intruders coming and going. And you eliminate road signs that tell birds your building is the place to be.

Inspection time.

Besides looking for nests, droppings, and other bird signs, walk around the inside and outside of your facility. Scrutinize refrigeration, electrical, water and other utility lines that go into your building and make sure the gaps are sealed. Do you have blocks, bricks, or other structural pieces missing? If so, they could provide an entryway for birds.

Also inspect your roofline. Many industrial buildings have gaps under the eaves. These gaps can act as little bird doors! In fact, we notice many commercial facilities are weatherproofed, but not fully bird and pest proof.

Slow down and get proactive.

We know you’re busy. With the slow summer months in the rear view, many of our retail customers are gearing up for the roar of fall and holidays. That’s why this is the ideal time to slow down and consider the safety, health, and experience of your customers.

“But I’ve never had bird problems,” you say. Gold star for you! However, in our business, we know proaction beats reaction. If you’ve never had your facility inspected by Meridian, this is an excellent time to do it. We offer a full facility inspection service, complete with a comprehensive report and recommendations.

And if you’re still not sure you need a fall cleaning or inspection, give us a call. We’ll answer your questions. (Pumpkin spice coffee drink not included).
